the Ziggurat at Uruk - the pyramids found in Egypt
- ancient carving of how
men used compound bows and weapons
Weapons: Iron Weapons and Compound Bows
Iron metallurgy was refined and improved around 1300 B.C.E. Around
1000 B.C.E. Mesopotamian craftsmen built their tools and weapons with iron and
bronze. Many weapons and tools around 1000 B.C.E. were used due to the
fact that Iron was cheaper and widely available. Rather than the usual melting
iron and pouring it into the mold a better way of making weapons and tools was
to heat it and hammer it into any shape they want. The Aryans made iron
tools like axes for clearing forests along with iron tipped plows. Pastoralists
were the developers of the new weapons like the compound bows and iron weapons
that had an impact on warfare.
Modes of Transportation: Chariots and Horse Back Riding
Horses were originally used for food but later domesticated. Around
4000 B.C.E. Indo-Europeans domesticated horses. Later on the Indo-European
people and the Hittites created the war chariots around 2000 B.C.E. The
Aryans were herders who herded horses and used them for transportation and war.
Pastoralists had modes of transportation such as chariots and horseback
riding that changed warfare.
Architecture and Urban Planning: Ziggurats
Ziggurats were the home of the gods in the polytheistic
religion. Many Ziggurats are found in Mesopotamia.
On the top of ziggurats there were temples. Ziggurats
were built to be close to the "heavens" so they could be closer to the gods and
have more contact. Ziggurats were built to stand out and be noticed by
anyone visiting the city. Ziggurats were the pride of the city. They
were built in a step like manner. Labor projects were common and used to
build temples, buildings, and more. An example is this Gargantuan Ziggurat
at Uruk.
Monumental Architecture and Urban Planning: Pyramids
From 2663-2195 B.C.E. the pyramids are constructed. The pyramids
symbolized the Egyptian's belief in that pharaohs would reach eternal
life. Pyramids in ancient Egypt were built as tombs for their
pharaohs. The pharaohs were buried with their possessions.
More than 180 pyramids were built during the Old Kingdom in Egypt.
Pyramids were built that were never matched in size during this era. The
pyramids of Giza were some of the biggest pyramids built, but the biggest in
size was the Aztec Pyramid in Mexico.
