Latin america 1500-1750
Political:
- The "encomienda" was made to enforce language and culture.
- Hernan Cortes arrives in Mexico and conquers Tenochitlan, and captures their current emperor Montezuma.
- Cortes is made the Emperor of Mexico in 1522.
- Pissaro takes over the Inca Empire in 1533.
- Laws are passed to protect the natives and later on Slaves regain independence from Portugal.
Economy:
- Spanish colonists were importing African slaves into Latin America in 1501.
- A monolopy trade was established between Spain and the Americas.
- There was a gold rush in Cuba in 1512 and Silver was discovered in Bolivia in 1545 .
- In the 1600's Spanish rule allowed native slaves to be traded in Chile.
Religion:
- Religion in Latin America was mainly Catholicism. It coming from Christianity and including God, Jesus Christ, and many saints.
- The Catholic church had a major role in the politics, yet it was opposed by liberals.
Society:
- Around 65 million Native Americans were located in Central and Latin America, and about 25 million of them were in Mexico.
- An outbreak of smallpox becomes a conflict in the Caribbean, which causes the disease of the second emperor of the Aztecs in 1520.
- Most of the Slaves resided in Brazil along with Natives that also became slaves. Both groups started to mix.
Innovations:
- In the Early 1500's the first sugar mill was built and a German Cartographer named the continent of America.
- The first newspaper in Latin America is published in Mexico in the 1700's.
Arts / Architecture:
- Native people had arts and sculptures of their own yet in the process of being forced to Christianity the Spanish built churches over Native temples and destroyed much of the culture.
- An elegant design used for churches was the form of Plateresque which has high arched ceilings.
- Boroque Architecture was a form of building more efficient building which were stronger and also made a better way to make sculptures that could be turned to monuments.
Near Geography:
- The Amazon river runs through South America stretching about 4,000 miles carrying more water than any other river in the world has impacted a lot of cultures in Latin America specifically ones in South America.
- Sierra Madre Occidental also impacts cultures in Mexico, it is a mountain range that stretches over Mexico until it reaches the Sierra Madre Oriental.
- Much of the Population Migrated to these areas from other parts of the world mainly through the Atlantic Ocean.
